How CBD is Changing The World Of Boxing

As regulations and social attitudes change, pro and amateur boxers alike are turning to CBD to up their game

CBD is rapidly becoming one of the biggest lifestyle trends in sport. Endless blog posts, Facebook statuses, and Youtube videos are howling the benefits of this little molecule from the rooftops.

This is all with good reason; CBD has been shown to have a huge range of benefits for both body and mind. It can ease pain, reduce inflammation, reduce anxiety, and even reduce injuries. More and more amateur and professional sportspeople are jumping on the CBD bandwagon everyday.

As its popularity increases the attitudes toward cannabis-derived medicines change, official governing bodies are changing their policies. The WADA (the World Anti-Doping Agency) recently lifted their ban on CBD, for professional boxers, who have been come out in droves in support of this announcement.

What Exactly is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a part of the cannabinoid family of chemicals. Cannabinoids are unique in how the interact with the human body. They affect the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a part of the central and peripheral nervous system, which can have a direct effect on dozens of different processes.

It is derived from cannabis, but it is important to remember that, unlike its sister chemical THC, it is totally non-psychoactive. This is why it is totally legal in the UK and more widely available than THC in the US. CBD is available in a variety of different forms: a tincture, a topical cream, or even a e-liquid for a vape pen.

How Can CBD Help Boxers?

CBD has several properties that can help boxers perform at a higher level. The main benefit it has is that it can reduce the recovery time between training sessions. The recovery time is when the gains from your workout manifest, and while they are important, the shorter they are the better. Careful use of CBD can allow a boxer to achieve more gains into a shorter space of time.

CBD Has Some Big Names Behind It

Several boxers have come out in support of the use of CBD in boxing training regimes. Teofimo Lopez, a Houndour-American ligthweight boxer. Lopez has come out as a user of CBD, claiming that he has been using it to enhance his training and reduce his recovery time. He specifically uses CBD pain relief cream to treat inflammation in his muscles. He has become such an outspoken spokesperson for CBD that one of the biggest names in the CBD industry decided to sponsor him.

Another pro boxer that uses CBD in his training regime is Shannon Briggs. With a 25 year career behind him, Briggs is an established name in the sport. A veteran heavyweight, Briggs boasts a career record of 60 wins to eight losses, but was suspended for six months in the summer of 2017 for excess testosterone in his system. Briggs is a huge proponent of CBD, endorsing the benefits it could have for high level athletes

On the more philanthropic side, Briggs sees CBD as a means to combat the opioid epidemic ravaging the USA – “We gotta come together to save lives”.
